Digital Cameras Invade Yet Another Device

Digital camera technology is now officially ubiquitous. The latest devices to add a camera? Garmin's handheld GPS (Global Positioning System) units.

Garmin recently introduced the Oregon 550 and 550T - two waterproof GPS devices with built-in 3.2-megapixel digital cameras. Needless to say, the Garmin GPS-cameras geotag every snap they take, so you'll always know where you were when you took that fabulous panoramic shot.

Of course, 3.2 megaixels makes these units digital camera lightweights. But 3.2 MP is plenty of resolution for digital snapshots to share online, and even to print out up to about 5" x 7".

I haven't seen any shots taken by the 550 or 550T yet, but even sheap digital cameras can produce acceptable shots these days. For compass-averse hikers, this may be just the thing. After all, you want to travel light out in the wilderness.

You may not want to rush out and buy Garmin's Oregon models, though. At $499.99 (500) and $599.99 (500T), they're not exactly a good choice for an impulse purchase. But if you're looking for a GPS unit, the addition of a digital camera makes the Oregon models more versatile than the competition.
