Shoot from where?

When shooting landscapes look around for the best location, think about it, think about what you want out of the photograph and try to eliminate any clutter that might take away from the finished picture.

Proper Composition

Proper composition of a photo is a primary factor in producing a successful picture.

Waterfalls

Photographing moving water is a lot of fun because many different effects can be achieved depending on the shutter speed selected. Set exposure using a fast shutter speed, and the water will be frozen in time. Spray and foam will be rendered in sharp detail. Use a slow shutter speed, and the water takes on a moody, ethereal quality. The right exposure depends on the effect you are looking for.

Motion

A slow shutter speed will allow you to add motion to a photo by blurring the subject.

Exposure

Some care should be taken when setting exposure. If there is enough medium tone then a center weighted or multi-segmented meter should give a good reading. However, if white water predominates in your picture, then the same precautions as for snow or other bright subjects should be taken.

Proper Composition

The proper composition of a photo is a primary factor in producing a successful picture.

Exposure

The exact light passing through the lens to create an image of proper density on the negative,is known as proper exposure. Proper exposure is the correct shutter speed and aperture (f-stop) setting for the light sensitivity of the chosen film.

Polarizer Filter

You should have a polarizer filter on your camera at all times. Without this filter the sky would appear washed out , tepid, a light blue. However, with the polarizer filter it would appear bold, a deeper, richer blue. They are very useful when shooting around water or window glass, any shoot where it is necessary to cut down on glare.

Silhouettes

Silhouettes are tricky. Be sure to bracket the main subject so that the bright light in the background surrounds the main subject making the subject stand out.

Shutter Speeds

Shutter speeds of 1/15 second to one or two seconds will create an effect similar to what you see here in photos of waterfalls where the water takes on a velvety look. The slower the exposure, the more blurred the water. Adjust exposure to try several different shutter speeds to see which you like best.

Use Lens Hoods Often

Whenever possible, use a lens hood on your lens. This prevents lens flare from the light striking the rim of the lens and refracting it across the front element, causing lack of saturation, especially in color photography

Pay Attention

When shooting anything architectural, pay attention to the effects of light on the subject, the subjects form, basic shape and structure.
