DXO Labs recently launched DXOMark, a new website devoted to testing and publishing indepenedent image-quality information on digital cameras. So far, 61 digital cameras have been tested and ranked on the site - with some surprising results.
DXO uses their newly developed DXOMark Sensor Scale, which incorporates color depth, dynamic range and low-light ISO information. Cameras are then compared on a 100-point scale.
As you might expect, the top five spots are occupied by Nikon and Canon digital SLR's.But this becomes quite an eye-opener when you scroll down the list... and discover that medium format digital cameras are also included in the testing!
That's right: Nikon and Canon beat out the $15,000 - $30,000 high-end digital cameras!
DXO's top five performers (in order of rank): Nikon D3, Nikon D3X, Nikon D700, Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III and Canon EOS 5D Mark II.
Based on DXOMark's tests, the Nikon D90 may be the bargain of the year. In 11th place, it was just two spots behind the pricey Hasselblad H3DII 39 - and scored an impressive 82.5% of the Nikon D3x's top rating.
