Panasonic Updates G1 Micro 4/3 Camera

Panasonic has demonstrated strong support for the Micro 4/3 digital camera format since introducing the first M4/3 model just a couple of years ago.

Though it's hardly venerable, Panasonic's Lumix G1 always felt out of date because of its inability to record HD movies.

But with the new G2 and G10 models, that's a problem of the past. Both new models include HD movie capability - as well as a new processor and a lighter kit lens.

Another feature you'll appreciate is Panasonic's Intelligent Auto shooting mode, which is easier to access on the new models.

The G10 is a bit more basic than the G2. For example, it lacks the G2's eye-detection capability in the viewfinder. The G2 also offers a touchscreen menu option, while the G10 does not. But most specs are very similar on both cameras.

Panasonic is also growing its line of G-series lenses. There are currently six. An an adapter also gives you access to a wide range of 4/3lenses - including some very fine Leica glass.

For those who find digital SLRs too large or too heavy... and who don't need pro-level picture quality... the Micro 4/3 format seems to be a good option. And Panasonic's new G10 and G2 look to be solid entries in the category.
